61  Food / Homestead Animals / Re: Video on farming fish, kinda on: June 27, 2010, 02:56:27 AM
I am wanting crappie in mine.  Will start the set up soon.  I got my brother-in-law interested in the idea of aquaponics in a greenhouse, though he doesn't like to eat fish so he's thinking about goldfish.

I am thinking of doing a farmers market stand next year.  Maybe could even offer fish eventually.  Thats my goal anyways.  I listened to that show with grandpa talipia the other day, and it kind of hit me that maybe I should look into something like that for a business.  I really wonder how things are gonna be with this oil spill and everything.  It might be a good time for smaller businesses to start up, which can farm raise some foods or similar foods that will be missed for years after this mess.
62  Food / Food Preservation & Processing / Gonna make some kraut on: June 24, 2010, 04:50:51 AM
The wife and I are gonna try making our own kraut.  We are gonna do a small batch with 2 heads of cabbage.  We should be working on it hopefully tomorrow before I go to work.

Anyone done this and have any tips?  Seems fairly easy, I'm excited.  Fresh kraut on some Reuben sandwiches sounds really yummy.

Congrats on the shed.

I just got over poison ivy.  I eventually used Zenfal.  Found a website were everyone gave it great reviews.  It was that last effort, it was all over my body.  It took me 2 treatments since it was so bad all over me.

Hope its a fun trip to Malibu, cave dweller. Relaxing on the beach sounds fun, even if its in the land of the rich Wink.

longbskt, sounds like some work.  House full of kids, it can be both fun and very hectic.  Least its for a good cause.

Think you can do the show with something like blog talk radio?  I think the audio is a little crappy but it puts the shows up in a different way.

Trash cans would be easy, but I was watching Billy the Exterminator one day, and these people had rat problems.  The people kept dog food in coolers and trash cans and stuff, but the rats where eating through the plastic to get to the food.  Once they know the food is around, they could kind of over run the cat.

Old deep freeze sounds good, but could be hard to find.  I like the idea of using metal containers, or maybe even some of the blue plastic ones, but with some modifications.  When I worked at the grocery store, I hated bagging up the peanuts.  They came in boxes, but we bagged them up to sell.  I always wanted to put a funnel on the bottom of a container so all we would have to do is put a bag under the funnel and pull a lever.  You'd just have to have a way to hang and lower the container.

67  Food / Homestead Animals / Re: Just got my chicks on: June 18, 2010, 04:53:20 AM
I was think'n that once I got some chickens again, I would give them the peace offering of some eggs every now and then.  Sure I would have plenty.  If I see them work on the fence, I may head over and help.  I'm gonna add some better fence to my tractor, and its been suggest to make some of it electric, just to help buzz predators away.  Motion detector spot lights, like JohnnyMax suggested on that last show.  The radio even would be good.

At least I didn't lose as many as JohnnyMax, sorry to hear that you lost that many.
68  Food / Homestead Animals / Re: Just got my chicks on: June 13, 2010, 12:18:34 AM
lol.  I was stomping mad.  I bite my lips when I get mad, and I had a blood ring around my lips.  I walked outside to see my favorite chicken in the dogs mouth as it ran off.  I ran over to the tractor, what was left, was lifeless, and I ran after the dog.  They have 3 dogs, one of which was chomping down on my sons chicken when I got up to them.  I went to their door, knocked, heard a voice yell out go away, so I took the dog and brought it back to the house.  If I had a gun, it would be history right now.  This dog is a pitbull, so I'm surprised it really didn't try to attack me, but it let me drag it back over here. The thoughts going threw my mind, stopped when I noticed my kids looking at me, so I let the darn thing go. But it should know better now than to come back over here, it did get some what of a beating.

I called the sheriff, but before he stopped over, the neighbors came out.  I think their kids were the ones home, and they had called their parents over.  They were very apologetic, course they could see feathers in their yard.  I told them I wanted the money I had spent on the chicks and everything else I spent on them.  Once they saw the sheriff, he came over with the money.

I'm new to the area, just moved here a little over a month ago.  There are a few neighbors who just let their dogs run loose.  Its a rural neighborhood area.  Most of the dogs have not been a problem, in fact I've really only seen this one dog on the property during this time. The part that does anger me, is that these people know that their dogs have been a problem in the past, doing the exact same thing.  So they should know to fence up their dogs.  They told me about it when we were talking.  They even have the fence, just haven't put it up.  My father in law owns the property, and so I've been out here for years, but haven't seen anyone else with chickens.  Some of the newer families out here are starting to do rabbits and stuff, so these problems will probably start to rise.

I was mad, but I'll chalk this one up as a learning experience for me and a warning to the others.  Any other dog found on the property will be shot here soon.

The last 2 weekends I spent building a chicken tractor.  I had just finished it, put the chicks out there and went to take a shower.  After my shower the kids ran in saying the neighbors dog was in our yard.  All my chicks are dead now. Angry

My intention was to have both chicken fence and 2x4 fence around the run, but my father-in-law was sure that the double layer of chicken fence was good enough.  The dog was able to tear loose one corner of the fence from the post.  They were only out there for 30 minutes, its so aggravating.

This all just happened about an hour ago.  I chased down the dog, talked with its owners and got a check for money spent on the chicks.  Neighbors were nice.  I was pretty fired up about it.  In total I've lost 8 chicks and a rabbit to that dog.  They are chaining it up, and putting up a fence, but next time its in my yard......... Shocked i'll have to use my paintball gun on it.
70  Food / Homestead Farm & Garden / Re: My potato harvest... on: June 12, 2010, 01:31:16 PM
I harvested some of mine in the rubber maid tub last night.  Small little tubers.  I know mine got too dry at times, and that eventually caused most of the plants to die.  I also didn't put enough drainage holes in the tub so they were constantly either too dry or too wet.  Still though, I made a self watering tub, which should be doing fine, just need enough of the water to soak up so I can bring it to the new house.
71  Food / Homestead Farm & Garden / Re: Hows your gardens? on: June 11, 2010, 02:26:40 PM

I mentioned this in my intro thread but I used my greywater to feed most of the garden by digging out the areas where the keyhole beds were going to be, to a depth of about 18" at the deepest end, the "pools" were dug out on slope, and backfilled with wood chips (because the power company came out to clear some trees around the power lines and were just throwing it away, so I took it and used it, but I have found that I should have used pea gravel to back fill with, because after a few years those chips are going to decompose away and my beds will sink down. live and learn) after backfilling I sheet mulched over the "pools" with compost and horse manure and all the organic matter I could get my hands on! so my raised beds sit on top of their own water supply! Permaculture makes so much sense!

Thats pretty cool.  We just got some heavy rains, and I noticed that my garden is on the downward path for the water.  Luckily my mulched paths between the beds took the brunt of damage.  Reading your post gives me an idea for the next garden.  Maybe I can dig some areas out, and build the beds on top.  Fill them with gravel and let them pool the water.

yeah we're in the 90's now too, and here soon it'll be the 100's.  The old house I had a good shade tree that covered the garden during the hottest part of the day.  You can always design your garden to have some plants grow up and shade others that might not take the heat.  Tall plants like corn, or heat loving okra can help shade tomatoes.
74  Homestead Information / Homestead Library / Re: Tons of free online books available for download on: June 04, 2010, 09:11:15 AM
I've used that site before.  Lots of old manuals and stuff.  Great site for learning some things.  I just signed up for my library card at my local library, now I think I've just about read everything of interst there and that is only about a dozen books.  Not much there. Sad  Will have to look one this one some more.

Raised beds are great.  I don't have mine but a few inches higher than ground level, but it still works.  Next year I may raise them up more as I add more compost and all. I can't wait till next year, will have plenty of compost from chickens and rabbits too.  I'm a little sad, I got a bunny sun. night from a friend and the neighbors dog came over and killed it the next morning, and today I lost one of my chicks.  He/she was my little escape artist.  Lessons learned, hopefully Embarrassed.  I got some new neighbors who have 2 horses, I need to ask them for some poop.   Grin My red worms would love it.

Thanks for that idea on buying bait worms.  That sounds like a good way to jump start it.

Got any pictures of your garden?  I like to see others gardens, I'll take pictures of mine tomorrow.
