Homestead Network / Homestead Talk / Been a Busy month

Been a little busy, but in between spinning my wheels at work and getting minimum garden work done, I got married. Mrs. Wagoneer is now going to be a homesteader too! First job, set up the aerated compost, second, sample the bosses new batch of Limoncello. Then go for a cruise on the new boat, the inflatable GINANTONIX. Also managed to get the disc harrow I wanted, free from a friend. Just needs new bearings. Unfortunately the honeymoon is going to have to wait, hope she likes to SCUBA dive.

Homestead Network / NEWS of Concern! / Re: Enormously Important and Troubling Accusation Being Made About Phone Calls/Email

We can't stop it, but I ahve nothing to hide...
To me, it's not about having nothing to hide. It's about whether or not the government has a right to know. In my opinion, they are not entitled to know everything about the citizens that they govern by the CONSENT of the governed. YMMV. JMHO. FWIW, it has been established that they must have a warrant, in order to tap the phone. What they are accused of doing in this case, is recording EVERYTHING, then going back to get a warrant to enable them to look at your previous communications should the need arise (if you do commit a crime). But, given that what they are doing is illegal to begin with, they will never admit it in court, but use it to find information that they can use. Given this, if we do not attempt to stop them, it is only a matter of time before it becomes accepted practice, and they start using it to find out if you have committed a crime in the past. For those that think they have nothing to hide, I would offer a very simple answer. You almost certainly HAVE broken the law, whether you were aware or not. For instance, have you purchased anything online that you were not taxed by the seller? If you have purchased much online from Amazon, that is almost certainly the case. Problem is, 45 states require you to pay the sales tax on that purchase when you file your state taxes. Most people do not even know about this requirement, because it is unenforceable. But, on Monday, the Congress will be voting on a bill that WILL make it enforceable. So, the bill, if passed, will make instant prosecutable criminals out of a large number of people. That is only one of many examples I could offer. Nobody knows how many laws they violate every day. They only become aware of it AFTER they have a problem. I can confidently say that most, if not all Americans DO have something to hide... even if they aren't aware of it. BG you are right, this guy has been a guest on a local AM talk show....and they do see everything, remember the expansion to the NSA some years ago. http://www.amazon.com/Three-Felonies-Day-Target-Innocent/dp/1594035229

Will check with my buddy Denny tomorrow, he has had a lot of turkeys. I try to get him on the forum but he is to busy chasing turkeys. His problem lately has them been laying but not staying on the eggs. I am pretty sure he fixed it though.
My problem was the wild ones were trying to get water out of my well pump. Kind of the reverse problem. I will try to find the pics later.

Dip their beaks in a water pan. But, always keep that water pan full and in the same location. I've heard of this happening, but never actually seen it. If you've already done this, I have no idea other than an IV of D5W and Ringers Lactate. But, that is from the old TV show, "Emergency!". So, tech has probably improved since the 70's.
Now it is just Ringers with a D50....Can't find my pics with Randolph Mantooth.

I saw this first at the bear camp in Maine where I go every couple of years. I did something similar with a glass wine carafe because someone wanted it caught alive and it worked fine.
It was very effective at this camp in Maine. The cabin sits for six months and the guide will put a couple of these out a week before they start guiding and mice gone.

Homestead Projects: Beds are half in, wildflowers are in, irrigation is on the way, wood is cut now to be organized for next year, new compost bin built. Toys: 4-wheeler going in the air for new chain and sprocket. Generator mount for the tractor so I can haul it around. Next month should have enough disposable income I can finally get the parts for Mori's Harley Moped and get that on the road for summer. Other stuff: Got a couple old dive watches as gifts, selling off a good chunk of the collection on E-bay so she can start her vintage E-bay business. One watch is perfect the other needs some help. I am learning about how to do it on you-tube. It is all cosmetic as the movement is fine. Found a source for a new crystal and some great guidance on getting the dings out and repainting the bezel. I am a known numismatist with horological tendencies

Welcome Long term you may want to look into raised beds, you can make them out of almost anything including downed trees that are poor firewood or pallet wood which is free a lot of times. There are people on this forum that will help you with making your own compost to fill the beds. I have found also that long term planning is key and just keep plugging away. Have fun with it!

If you are using a grill you can make Hobo Dinners.
Onions Carrots Green Beans Potatoes Ground beef salt pepper onion powder garlic powder
Season the meat. Make a pattie. Place in foil. Add veggies. Cook for approx 40 min on grill or open camp fire. Add any other veggies you like.
When I worked for the scouts something similar was dinner on the fire 2 nights out of the week. It is easy and cleanup is fast. I could do program all day, do a canoe outpost and throw this together after the fire was going and feed 20 kids no problem. One thing I added was some wild edibles, the favorite was wrapping everything in Spicebush Viburnum leaves that the kids gathered.

24 at Glen Owen last night. The water bottle I keep in the Millennium Falcon (the silver SVT) was frozen solid. I want to plant soon and the soil temps are in the 30's.

I have fixed bindings on large paperbacks using elmers glue, card stock and the old style 2 inch gauze bandages. When I get a chance I will post a pic of my old copy of "The Complete Walker III". They are worth the money though if you can't find them.
