I have eaten blackbird when I was a kid. It was just the breast cooked down in a gumbo. Good dark meat  This could put food on your table

I ate a grackle once as a kid. I was so proud of that new Daisy BB gun and since I killed it my grandfather made me clean it so my grandmother could cook it.

Deliver me oh lord from the fowlers net... that would require someone hiding nearby to grab the bird when it hits the net, or is the net supposed to fall off the tree and entangle said bird?

I did searches for videos of a net birds fly into but could not find any. I know people string clear fishing line over their chicken run and hawks can see it from pretty high up.

When I was a child, and even during the war, no one would have dreamed of eating a pigeon. They were rats with wings. They were dirty, disease infested vermin.
Now they have discovered that pigeons hold no more inherent dangers than any other wild game. As with wild geese, or ducks, or turkeys, or pheasants, they should be prepared and cooked with care, but they are a good source of protein.
One more absolute truth that I have had to unlearn.
In fifty years or so, health food stores will be selling cholesterol supplements. LOL.

They already do sell cholesterol supplements. Its called organic butter.
Real butter was one of the first things I taught myself how to make. Heavy whipping cream + electric mixer + 15 mins = real butter |

All squabs are pigeons, but not all pigeons are squabs.
A squab is a very young pigeon. Still in the nest. Usually domestic, because they are easier to harvest. You have to grab them before they fledge. In fact, before they even sit on the edge of the nest and flap their wings in preparation for flight.
Pigeons are tough and they must be cooked moist and slow, but a squab is tender and juicy and can be roasted. If you can catch your squab at just the right moment, he will have more meat on him than an adult bird too.

Out here the farmers are happy to let folks zap pigeons around their grain silos (provided that you aren't a yahoo). I find pigeon to be just like dove only 5 times bigger. Pop off the breasts, wrap in pepper bacon and grill. Yummy!

As far as trapping goes, we had a trick that we used to get seagull on the boat (closest thing to pigeon in the gulf of mexico).... throw out a handful of rice.
some of the birds will eat the rice more than others, the rice will swell, and they will be unable to take off. then, just get them with a net.

My Nana always told me you could catch birds if you salted their tails. Never could get close enough to one to verify this but boy did I try ! Perhaps she just wanted me out of her hair for a while ?   |
