When I have a cold, I usually end up with a sore throat.  I've discovered that this gets rid of my sore throat every time, at least temporarily.

1 tsp honey
1 tsp apple cider vinegar
1 tsp lemon juice
pinch of cayenne

Put in a cup and add hot water.

The cider vinegar is pretty strong smelling in the steam and seems to help clear the sinuses.  But the cayenne is what eases the sore throat.

I think the honey and lemon deal with the sore throat.  The vinegar and the pepper work on the sinuses and make it taste strong enough to convince you that it's working.
My Gramm would put sugar into a saucer and then place the cut halves of onions, cut side down in the sugar.  Leave it for a while, preferably overnight and then feed the resulting syrup to children who complained of sore throat.
Gramm used to boast that none of her great-grands got sick while we were staying with her.
Yes we did.  We just learned not to complain.

the honey and lemon probably do work on the throat, but you can actually feel the cayenne working.  It's a warming on the throat.
