Well, today I took a twig off of a green tea tree and spliced it into a tiny branch on a huge oak tree. Not sure if it will work or not. I did not use any chemicals or nothing. I just cut a slice in the oak branch and trimmed the end of the green tea twig to a flat point and stuck it in the cut. I then wrapped it with plastic. We shall see. I will graft a peach, pear and apple next, if it works and a friend has a texas lemon tree. It makes huge lemons. I do not have too high a hopes that it will work.

where did you get yout tea tree at? I know the queen was laughing about it but I live in SC and I would like to have one or two trees as the tee tree oil is used in a sunburn lotion also. I am trying to put in a few trees this spring to make me a source for apples and peach trees. I want to have a small orchard in a couple of years to get my fruit from.

I ended up ordering it off eBay. It was hard to find.

Johnny Max I started listening to to both after you were on The Survival Podcast. I am about half way through your shows now and I heard you mention this experiment. I did not hear you mention a very specific step that is crucial to making this work. If you cut a limb you will notice 3 elements that make up a branch. The bark, cambium layer, and an inner core of old and new wood. When you graft in a new sprout it is an absolute must that the green cambium layer of the new branch be touching the green cambium layer of the host branch. If not, your graft will not take. Once you have it in place you can take damp spaghnum moss and wrap it over the graft and then wrap the whole joint with clear plastic and secure it with string or ties. If your donor tree branch is big enough you can place a graft on each edge, making sure the cambium layer on one side of the limbs are touching. I hope this helps your next experiment.

Sorry to tell you Johnny, but your grafting won't work. You can't graft fruit on oak trees. You can graft different fruits on the right kind of stalk, For instance You get a strong stalk of a plum. The fruit on this variety isn't good. But the stalk is strong. You can graft several kinds of plums on that stalk.

BackwoodsHome magazine had a good grafting article this issue.
GGirl is right however, to graft successfully the established tree and new stock have to be in the same family.
Plums-peaches-cherries Lemons-oranges-satsumas Apples-crab apples-pears (I've read that apples to pears won't work but by-god I've seen it)
There are other combinations. One thing I've noticed is that all of the combos that work have very similar seeds.

Not sure if it was incapability or the fact that I did it in the middle of a drought with 100 degree temps

It was incapability. Root stock and grafting stock must be closely related or it just won't work. June.
