I just aquired a 175 gal. oil tank that is in great shape but don't need to store oil.  Any ideas for other uses?  I don't think I should store gas in it but if anyone knows if that would work and how I could modify it that would be my first choice.

Is it used ?

Not sure there is much you could do with it other than store oil/gas/kero if it is used.

If it's new... hrmmmm, no idea either.

I wouldn't store gasoline, since it has a tendency to go bad. Kerosene, if you have a use for it, stores well. I really can't think of anything else, since everything I'm thinking of, has something to do with people, food, etc. Once you use a container for oil, I really wouldn't use it for anything to do with people, animals, or food. But, maybe that's just me.

It may not have been HEALTHY, But I had a 275 Gallon in my basement. We cut it into to bring it out, As it was put in there before they added on to the back of the house. I took it out in the back yard and put hinges on it and set it on fire to burn what ever was left in it. Made a great smoker out of it, as well as we Barbequed on it. I did have several good burns and smoked it up a couple times before we used it.  Never ever had a taste or smell of oil or any other contaminates. but like I said. It may have not been healthy. You can also make a trash burner out of it, parts washer, or store kerosene in it as BG mentioned above.  Lips sealed

A batch digester would be a cool to try but I may try it later in it's life-span.  For now, because the tank is in such good shape I am thinking about using it to store Kerosene.  I found out my 2N will fun on kero with a little tinkering and an auxiliary gas to tank to get it started.  I wouldn't do that until I had to anyway though.  It would be really cool if I could find a generator that ran on Kero.  I found some overseas that were all 50 Hz not 60.  I did some inventory and most things I have that run on liquid fuels use gasoline and next in line is Kerosene so it makes sense to store that in quantity.

Just for the fun of it, you might want to check out the websites of the companies that make the generator your looking at, to see if they can be easily changed to the correct voltage (a lot of the EU market is 220) and frequency.

When I was working on boats, we would set the frequency of the generators, by setting the speed of the engine. Of course, consumer-type products don't usually let you do that so that people don't smoke their appliances by accident. But, maybe there is a setting that can be changed by someone that, like you, seems to know what they're doing and talking about.

Aha!  I happen to have an electrician in my office.  I never considered that the Hertz could be changed by adjusting the speed but know that you mention it, it cannot be adjusted any other way.  The rotor and stator speed give it the alternation.

I also found that some older diesel engines run just fine on kerosene.  More research to do on that.

If it has ever had petroleum products in it, be extremely careful about cutting or welding on it.  I'm sure you know that, but I thought it would be worth mentioning!

Yep. And, it's also worth mentioning that acetylene has a nasty tendency to explode if it mixes with oil.

Thanks! but well aware of it.  It had fuel oil in it.  Never hurts to mention to others about a potential explosion.
