Thanks to JM & the Queen I got excited enough to try a small 10 gallon tank with goldfish.  Plus the husband isn't completely on board with my new hobby and needs proof.  After several days I haven't killed the fish, so this is a success!  I bought gravel for the grow bed but not sure what plant/plants to try yet.  I've read about several types of mediums and my question is:

What's your favorite medium to use in aquaponics?

If you have small grow beds, you can try different medium in each.
Then we could all learn from ya Wink

As for what to grow, since this is a demonstration, fast growing stuff like radishes, green onions and a leafy green of some sort.
So when you plop a fresh salad in front of him 3 months later he can see the value.

Good Idea!  I do have vermiculite so I will try gravel and vermiculite.  I listened to the plant lighting show and I'll be looking for a light today.

Yeh, what Greenhorn said.
And vermiculite might clog up the filters or intake.

This is the setup so far.  There will be more plants but you get the idea.  I'm favoring vermiculite because the pebbles make a container very heavy.
