Well, I had a great relaxing time making my newspaper pots today. I found this box the Queen threw away that had an egg in it with a pair of pantyhose in it. I took it out, because I thought it was the perfect size for pots to start some seeds in. I made a bunch of pot and I am going to fill them with soil and put them in a plastic tray that I will line with plastic. I will put them under my grow lights.

This is my second year to make my own newspaper starter pots. There is no reason to ever buy pots again. It worked too good and it makes me feel great doing it myself with something that would just be thrown away.

I tried this for the first time this year and reached the same conclusion you did.... there is no reason to spend money on pots when it is this easy! I made mine round instead of square though: http://blog.briangallimore.com/2011/01/pots-from-newspaper/This is my second year to make my own newspaper starter pots. Thanks to both of you for posting step by step pics. I'll be trying this for the first time this year. Last fall I collected a shopping cart full of 'Horse Apples' and will be starting as many as I can this spring in hopes of creating living fences on my property.

I went with square because they fit together tightly and support each other when they get wet.

Plus the roots don't go in a circle, so less chance of becoming rootbound.

I always used a soupcan. I might use a box this year.

I made some of these because of this thread. Supper easy. Rolled mine around an empty pop can. Then I found a small clear plastic tub that had a clear lid, and stuck them in a window sill. Its only been a few days, but it looks like a great damp environment for the seeds.
Thanks for the idea, saved me some money.

Just checked my broccoli and cabbage in those pots. 4 days and my broccoli sprouted. Awesome starter pots. I didn't have this much luck with the peat pots or pellets.

I made a bunch of these too. Plan on making more. I have a bunch of old peat pots left here from previous owners. some the bottoms were eaten out. danged rats. just broke off a piece of peat from a destroyed pot and put it on the bottom. I also bought on of those small potmakers. there was a discount with seed ored from JUNGS seeds so I couldn't resist. i should smash the bottom real nice. I might make a big one with PVC. I'd like t smash the bottom better. Been taping it... kind of sucks... I saw some on the net like that!!

I just made mine. I used this video because there is no tape or staples involved.
i made some small and some large. For the smaller ones do the same thing just use half the size of paper. Is it spring yet?
